Transgender Hair Transplants

Hair plays an important role in the way that we express ourselves. It can be wild or tame; bright or dull; but either way, it is a reflection of who we are and what we would like the world to see in us. For transgender people, hair plays an especially crucial role in affirming one’s gender identity.

Depending on one’s circumstances, however, it may be especially difficult to get the hair you want. That’s where our transgender hair transplants come in. Through a minimally-invasive procedure, surgeons are able to give transgender and gender-neutral recipients the means to affirm their gender in the ways they want.

Affirming, effective, and possibly life-changing – that’s what we offer.

FUE mega sessions

FUE Mega sessions refers to transplanting a large number of hair follicles during single session resulting in a faster result.

No Shave FUE

No Shave FUE refers to transplanting hair follicles from one area of the scalp to another without having to shave, even for long hair transplant patients.

Body to Scalp FUE

Body to Scalp FUE is a complex procedure referring to transplanting hair follicles from beard, chest, and extremities to scalp.

The Technology & Techniques Behind Transgender Hair Transplants

A hair transplant can be an incredibly complex and intensive procedure for the surgeon. This is because the primary method of hair transplantation – Follicular Unit Extraction (or FUE, for short) – involves removing individual hair follicles from the recipient’s donor site (typically the back of the head). This is done through the use of micro-punches. Each follicle is then thoroughly vetted with the use of a stereoscopic microscope to determine their quality. Finally, the follicles are reinserted into the recipient area (which will vary from one patient to the next) with the use of a Choi implanter pen. Fortunately for recipients, this entire process is painless thanks to local anesthesia which is applied to both the donor and recipient areas.

Step-By-Step Overview of the Transgender Hair Transplant Procedure

For transgender recipients, the process of the hair transplant will likely begin before you ever book a consultation. You’ll likely have an idea of what kind of look you would like, be it masculine, feminine, or something entirely different. Through discussions with a qualified surgeon, you should be able to clearly visualize the end result of the procedure – your surgeon will be able to advise on what is possible and what is not, all of which is dependent on the hair from your donor area.

Once you have discussed these preliminary details with your surgeon, you will need to provide consent to proceed with the surgery. At this point, your surgeon may elect to perform a “test surgery” to assess the quality of your existing hair in greater detail. In general, however, you should be able to proceed with the main operation right away.

This procedure can take anywhere between 4 to 8 hours, and will depend on how many grafts are required (determined by the end result you have in mind). Your surgeon will then anesthetize the donor and recipient areas, and then begin extracting individual hair follicles. After examining the follicles, they will then be reinserted into the recipient area.

Gender-Affirming and Natural-Looking

Transgender hair transplants are incredible for transgender patients who would like to further reinforce their gender identity. Because the procedure is so involved, complex, and precise, you are able to achieve the look of your dreams like never before.

Better still, the final result will look completely natural – there should be none of the scarring typically associated with hair transplant surgeries, and the transplanted hair will grow just like the rest of your hair. You can style it, trim it, or allow it to grow as much as you want without worry.

Before treatment

The patient came with a noticeable hair thinning in the frontal area. Aside from the aesthetic aspect, this issue also affected his confidence in daily communication.

After treatment

Following the hair transplant, the patient achieved natural density and restored hairline. The improvement brought both an aesthetic change and greater comfort in social interaction.

Advantages of Transgender Hair Transplants

Transgender hair transplants offer a variety of great benefits to their recipients.

  • Gender affirmation: Because hair transplants offer so much customization and variety, recipients are able to express themselves and reaffirm their gender like never before.
  • Reduced gender dysphoria: Things like hairlines, hair shape, and density can be stressful to deal with for transgender people if they do not line up with their gender identity. With a hair transplant, however, the effects of gender dysphoria can be greatly reduced.
  • Increased self-confidence: There is nothing better than feeling good and looking good, and a hair transplant can be exactly what some transgender people may need to feel great about themselves.
  • Improved mental health: Hair transplants and other gender-affirming procedures have been shown to increase the life satisfaction of many transgender people all over the world.
  • Natural-looking results: The precise and calculated nature of the procedure and the lack of “stripping” means that your transplanted hair will blend seamlessly with any existing hair you may have.

Ideal Candidates for Transgender Hair Transplants

Naturally, transgender hair transplants are primarily aimed at transgender individuals who would like their hair to reaffirm their gender identity. Transgender surgeries and operations that involve altering one’s hormones can sometimes have an adverse effect on one’s hair. In these cases, a transplant becomes necessary in order to regain one’s self-confidence.

These transplants can also work well for non-binary recipients as well, who may desire a certain type of hair that they would otherwise be unable to attain by themselves.

So long as you are healthy, at the right age when your hair-growth patterns are fully developed, and desire a different hairstyle or shape to the one you currently have, this procedure may be for you.

Recovery and Aftercare

As with many cosmetic procedures and surgeries, a hair transplant may cause you to feel some mild discomfort or irritation in the days immediately following your surgery. Rest assured, however, that this is perfectly natural, and any residual pain you may experience should subside within a week with no interference on your part.

In total, the recovery process can take anywhere between 12 and 18 months, depending on the extent of your surgery. The first few months following your surgery will see the transplanted hair begin to shed. Again, this is completely natural, and signals that they will soon start to regrow into the shape you want them to.

You’ll start to see real progress around month 6, at which point “wispy” hairs may appear. It’s important that you follow your surgeon’s aftercare guidelines prescribed to you, which may include follow-up appointments that you must attend. In general, you’ll want to avoid excessive sun exposure; any strenuous activity or exercise; and touching the recipient area. You’ll also want to wash your hair regularly and gently to ensure optimal results.

Frequently Asked Questions

During the recovery and aftercare processes, you’ll want to avoid any and all hair products except those prescribed to you by your surgeon. Once your hair has fully recovered, you’ll be able to style and trim it any way you want.

A hat may sometimes be necessary in order to mitigate sun exposure as much as possible. However, you will want to ensure that it is loose-fitting, and remove it regularly to allow the hair to breathe.

While it is technically possible to get a transplant while still undergoing hormone therapy, it isn’t advised since it requires precise coordination on your part, and that of your surgeon and physician.

Transgender hair transplants are intended to be fully customizable and affirming for your unique or specific gender identity. The extent of your hair’s customizability is determined by the actual quality of your donor hair, but it is theoretically possible to get any style you want.
