The Technology & Techniques Behind Transgender Hair Transplants

A hair transplant can be an incredibly complex and intensive procedure for the surgeon. This is because the primary method of hair transplantation – Follicular Unit Extraction (or FUE, for short) – involves removing individual hair follicles from the recipient’s donor site (typically the back of the head). This is done through the use of micro-punches. Each follicle is then thoroughly vetted with the use of a stereoscopic microscope to determine their quality. Finally, the follicles are reinserted into the recipient area (which will vary from one patient to the next) with the use of a Choi implanter pen. Fortunately for recipients, this entire process is painless thanks to local anesthesia which is applied to both the donor and recipient areas.

Step-By-Step Overview of the Transgender Hair Transplant Procedure

For transgender recipients, the process of the hair transplant will likely begin before you ever book a consultation. You’ll likely have an idea of what kind of look you would like, be it masculine, feminine, or something entirely different. Through discussions with a qualified surgeon, you should be able to clearly visualize the end result of the procedure – your surgeon will be able to advise on what is possible and what is not, all of which is dependent on the hair from your donor area.

Once you have discussed these preliminary details with your surgeon, you will need to provide consent to proceed with the surgery. After examining the follicles, they will then be reinserted into the recipient area.

A hat may sometimes be necessary in order to mitigate sun exposure as much as possible. However, you will want to ensure that it is loose-fitting, and remove it regularly to allow the hair to breathe.

While it is technically possible to get a transplant while still undergoing hormone therapy, it isn’t advised since it requires precise coordination on your part, and that of your surgeon and physician.

Transgender hair transplants are intended to be fully customizable and affirming for your unique or specific gender identity. The extent of your hair’s customizability is determined by the actual quality of your donor hair, but it is theoretically possible to get any style you want.
